Brand Perception: What It Is & How It Affects Your Business

Jon Williams·8 March 2022
We are all influenced by brand perception, whether we realise it or not. Brands have the ability to influence our decision on what we will buy with everything from washing powder to a car. Brand perception can be influenced by many factors including;
  • Consumer experience
  • The opinions of other consumers (word of mouth)
  • Types of advertising used
  • Shifts in the economy
Brand perception can be defined as the way that customers see, experience and feel about your business. It's not just about what you say about your company or the products/services you produce, but also about how you present yourself. Your website is just one of the ways that you can help to influence your brand perception. The content and imagery you choose to use play a huge role in shaping customer perceptions. Once a consumer has formed an opinion about a brand, it can be pretty tough to change that opinion. So it's important to get it right the first time.

Big brand loyalty

Are you Apple or Android? Pepsi or Coca-Cola? Tesco or Aldi? Do you know why you choose one over the other? These brands have created a certain brand perception through a combination of service, experience and marketing and once you have formed your allegiance, it tends to stick. Whilst personal preference does play a part in this, brand perception is hugely influenced by the business itself and when consumers hold a brand in high regard, they tend to become more loyal. Have you thought about why you are loyal to certain brands?

Advertising & Marketing

You can use marketing to shift the focus of your brand. Think about banks, over recent years, many people experienced negative feelings towards many big-name banks. You may also have noticed a shift in advertising campaigns. Banks switched their campaigns to be more emotive and thought-provoking - in order to switch their brand perception.

Choosing the right domain name for your website

How can you influence your brand perception?

You can use data to help you understand what customers feel and think about your brand. You can define your brand perception by looking at reviews, customer experience, functionality, advertising, social engagement and customers. Consider what your values are, how do you want others to think and feel about your brand? Start by conducting a survey to find out how your business comes across. Include questions such as;
  • What words would you use to describe our brand?
  • What do you think/feel when you think of our brand?
  • How would you describe our brand to your friends/business associates
  • How would you describe your experience with our brand
  • How likely are you to recommend our brand?
Review your online presence Review your analytics, is your brand getting noticed? Are people interacting with your social media pages? Is your website attracting visitors and are they taking the relevant action when they do? Do you receive online reviews? Talk to your customers Data can be collected from your customers and their experience with you and your brand. Simple questions asked at certain points in their journey with you will help.
  • How did your customers find out?
  • Why did they choose your product/service - if they choose not to this is also valuable, asking for feedback when you don't engage new customers can yield vital information too.
  • How do they interact with your brand after they have purchased your product/service?
Once you have collected and analysed all of this data, you can assess how people feel about your brand and identify areas where you could try to change the way you are perceived.
